PE board has excellent resistance to most living and industrial chemicals. Certain kinds of chemicals are chemically aggressive, such as corrosive oxidants (concentrated nitric acid), aromatic hydrocarbons (xylene), and halogenated hydrocarbons (carbon tetrachloride). The polymer is non-hygroscopic and has good water vapour resistance for packaging applications. HDPE has good electrical properties, especially high insulation dielectric strength, making it very suitable for wires and cables. Medium to high molecular weight grades have good impact resistance at ambient temperatures and even as low as -40F. The properties of various grades of HDPE are an appropriate combination of four basic variables: density, molecular weight, molecular weight distribution, and additives. Different catalysts are used to produce tailor-made polymers with special properties. These variables combine to produce HDPE grades for different applications; a balance of performance is achieved. It has good chemical stability and can resist the erosion of most acids, alkalis, organic solutions and hot water. Good electrical insulation.
